Allison and Victor celebrate the release of their new album Nation of Jubilation for Jazz in the Canyon 2023. While Allison performs on guitar and vocals, Victor Martin takes the stage on saxophone.  They will be performing with  stand up bassist Bruce Calin and percussionist Michael Whipple.  With their music recently taking them to the Oregon Coast, the Salem Arts Festival, Mazatlan Mexico, and Quincy, California,, their sound carries a positive, inclusive message that blends roots music, original songs, bossa nova and jazz standards laced with some French lyrics. Reminiscent of bossa nova singer Astrud Gilberto and saxophonist Stan Getz. these two have shared the stage with the Blind Boys of Alabama, blues legend John Hammond and Tuck and Patti, and most recently Akira Tana and Lazy Lester.

Originally from the Los Angeles area, music and art has been guitarist Charles Valona’s passion and life work for over 50 years. He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1979 and then relocated again in 2000 to Shasta County.

Performing with Bruce Calin on acoustic bass and Dan Kinkle on drums,  the trio performs a variety of Jazz, Pop and Blues classics with a distinct blend of musical genres and styles. Originally from Hibbing, MN, Bruce has worked as a professional bassist for over 50 years. Bruce has performed with the Minnesota Symphony and some of the most popular musical acts ever, to name a few…Bob Hope Orchestra, legendary guitarist Tal Farlow, Peggy Lee and more. Bruce was also the bassist for Garrison Keeler’s “Lake Wobegon” radio show for four years. Mr. Calin located to Shasta County roughly 17 years ago from MN and has been a very integral part of the live music scene in Shasta County since. Bruce is a member of the North State Symphony and has performed with many groups here in Shasta County.

Cleveland Boney, a virtuoso on the piano, teamed up with the exceptionally talented saxophonist Greg Takemoto and the groovy electric bassist Danny Castro to form a jazz trio that has been making waves in the world of jazz music. Known for their innovative approach to jazz, they seamlessly blend progressive jazz elements with timeless jazz standards, creating a musical experience that captivates audiences across the globe.

**Cleveland Boney (Piano):**
Cleveland Boney’s mastery of the piano is nothing short of extraordinary. His nimble fingers dance across the keys, effortlessly weaving intricate melodies and harmonies. Boney’s musical journey began at an early age, and he honed his craft through years of dedicated practice. His compositions and improvisations showcase his deep understanding of jazz theory, and his ability to push the boundaries of traditional jazz piano playing is what sets this trio apart.
**Greg Takemoto (Saxophone):**
Greg Takemoto, the soulful saxophonist of the group, possesses a unique ability to convey emotions through his instrument. His saxophone solos are a revelation, ranging from soul-stirring ballads to blistering improvisations. Takemoto’s influences span the entire history of jazz, from the smoky tones of Dexter Gordon to the avant-garde explorations of John Coltrane. **Danny Castro (Electric Bass):**
Danny Castro, the anchor of the group on electric bass, provides the groove that underpins their sound. Honeybee performs their original music along with Vintage Jazz tunes in vintage style and American roots music! Honeybee is based out of Redding, CA, an epic town located in Northern California!

Honeybee performs as a Duo with Mo Ford on guitar and vocals and Fiddle Bee on fiddle and vocals. Honeybee Trio/Quartet includes Scott Ciucci on percussion and Michael Harris on percussion, saxophone and melodica!

Hailing from the Santa Cruz area, Kevin McDowell  is known as the “The Lone Arranger.” Kevin studied music with Ray Brown at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. With an eclectic classical jazz style, this guitarist has shared the stage with Elvin Bishop and Mose Allison.

Kevin  will be performing a genre called Third Stream Jazz, a mix of classical and jazz ideas with Tim Kovatch. According to Kevin, “My main influences are Bach,Beethoven, Leon Redbone, Mose Allison and Robert Johnson.  To fit some bits of all these great artists into jazz and popular standards as arranged for the nylon string guitar is endlessly fulfilling.  My study of this materiel has spawned a bit of composing.  ‘Lemurian Dance’ is my latest piece.”

 image0-3A resident of Dunsmuir for four years, violinist Tim Kovatch has a diverse music background. He played many years in the San Jose symphony orchestra as well as  Bay Area Broadway shows. With the Bryan Farnon Orchestra in South Lake Tahoe, he backed up Johnny Mathis, Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle. One of his most memorable gigs was with Van Morrison on the “It’s Too Late to Stop Now” tour that went through Canada, Europe and the States.

Tim recently discovered a mutual love of jazz with friend Kevin . He is enjoying playing in this recently formed duo.

Ron Jackson TRioCelebrated seven-string jazz guitarist Ron Jackson and his trio will perform for the 10th Annual Jazz in the Canyon. With Ron Jackson on seven-string archtop guitar, Essiet Essiet will take the stage on bass while Sylvia Cuenca performs on drums.Versatile and sophisticated jazz guitarist Ron Jackson has performed, recorded and taught music in over 30 countries. With a varied career as a performer, composer and arranger, Highlights include shows and tours with artists such as Taj Mahal, Jimmy McGriff, Larry Coryell, Benny Golson, Oliver Lake, Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller. Ron has been featured as a leader in jazz festivals all over the world, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Edinburgh Jazz Festivals and Winter Jazzfest, NYC.

Born in the Philippines, lived in many states as a kid, then settled in Harvard, Massachusetts, west of Boston, Ron was initially influenced by rock guitar greats like Jimmy Page, before falling under the spell of jazz and following the style and career of jazz guitar luminaries like Pat Metheny and George Benson. After attending Berklee School of Music on scholarship, studying jazz composition and arranging, Ron spent two formative years in the mid-1980’s living and playing guitar with the lively expat jazz community in Paris, France. Ron moved to New York City where he remains an active participant in Gotham’s always vibrant jazz scene. A master of the six, seven and twelve string guitars, Ron appeared on over 40 albums by such artists as Hal Singer, Graeme Norris, Ron Blake, Gisele Jackson and T.K. Blue, before founding the independent record label Roni Music in 2003 which has since released some of his eight of his albums as a leader including The Dream I Had (2003), Flubby Dubby (2008) and Akustik InventYours (2014).  His latest project, Jazz Standards and Other Songs (2019) is an alluring mix of familiar jazz numbers and innovative adaptations of songs from other genre’s like his trendsetting arrangement for jazz trio of Drake’s “Passion Fruit.”

Ron was grateful to be selected as the winner of the 1996 Heritage International Jazz Guitar Competition. He has also been a recipient of the 2012 Donald Knutson Memorial Development Fund and the 1991 and 2000 Meet the Composer Performance Fund. He endorses, Eastman Guitars, Kremona Guitars, Aria Classical Guitars, Paul Reed Smith Guitars and Godin Guitars.

An acclaimed music educator, Ron currently teaches guitar at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The New School, Midori and Friends, and is the founder and director of the website www.practicejazzguitar.com. Ron has held master classes, concerts and workshops at Jazz at Lincoln Center-Jazz in the Schools, The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, Escuela Creativa Musica in Madrid, Spain and California State University.

Ron has made appearances in several major motion pictures including The Greatest Showman, Vulgar, and Fly by Night. He has also performed in pit orchestras on many Broadway and off-Broadway shows including Avenue Q, Fosse, Shuffle Along, and Bring In `Da Noise, Bring In `Da Funk.

In recent years, Ron has also developed a side career as a freelance writer for Acoustic Guitar magazine where he’s published educational and guitar instructional articles.




Scott Silber

Scott Silber came to California in 1979 to sing jazz in Kirby Shaw’s jazz choir. He’s played guitar since he was 12, hacking his way through to the ripe old age of 59. He is a singer songwriter who just plays mostly for fun, occasionally getting off a good one.

Supertonic Jazz featuring Nala  Kathleen

Tyler Mansfield on guitar and Joshua Cannan on tenor sax make up the Supertonic Jazz Duo. Both grew up in the Redding area and play in local funk powerhouse Soul Punch, and also enjoy  collaborating with many other Redding-area musicians. The duo performs jazz standards and pop covers with a jazz and sometimes latin flair. Earlier this year, Supertonic Jazz had the opportunity to perform at the Fillmore Jazz Festival in San Francisco. Influences include Joshua Redman, Charlie Hunter, and Greg Takemoto.
